Add a Wiki to your Web.unc.edu Site

You know you’ve been asking for it… finally it is here!  A Wiki for your website!  Log into any web.unc.edu site and you will see Wiki’s on the left hand side as an option under Pages and Comments.  Just add your own Wiki and you’re off.

A wiki is a website where users can add, remove, and edit every page in a web-browser.  What it does really well is make it easy for you to create lots of documents related to each other and share them with the world.

Faculty and Class Websites

We are slowly opening up the site for faculty and staff members across the college.  Last semester we piloted the service with Sarah Shields and her “Nations Borders Identity Conflict” course.  The students created a series of static pages with all sorts of information about conflicts from 10 different conflicts around the world.

We also have a couple of classes using web.unc.edu websites for their classes this semester.

You can create your own site now by going to http://web.unc.edu and following the Getting Started directions.

If you need help creating a site, please submit a ticket to http://oasis.unc.edu/remedy and someone will get in touch with you to get you going.  We are also available to come to your class to teach students how to use the site if you would like.

Onyen Authentication and Shibboleth

Thanks to Mike Jennings (ITS) and Don Sizemore (Ibiblio) we now have Onyen authentication working and secure.  We are using the latest and greatest authentication protocol called Shibboleth.  If you log into any other Shibbolized service (like Blackboard) you will not have to log in again when you come to any web.unc.edu site.

Over the holiday break we also moved the service to a virtualized server on campus.  It allows us a lot more flexibility as far as configurations go.  Special thanks again to the Ibiblio folks for all their continued help in getting the server set up and configured.
