Departments and Groups Examples

Many departments on campus are still updating their sites with HTML and Dreamweaver, and it very often occurs that the person who used to do that has left and there is no one to update the site any more. The college has a solution for them with Plone Sites, but other groups on campus do not have web-support. Web.unc.edu has provided a good solution for them, both for hosting, and for their websites.

The Carolina Asia Center was one such site (http://carolinaasiacenter.unc.edu). They had an old site and need a new one built right away to get some information updated. I met with them and did a brief intro and they built out the site in about a weeks time. Their new site uses the federated theme and has all the modern features that websites should have (RSS, events, news items, bulletins, etc.) and they can update the site themselves.

The McNair Scholars Program has a couple of sites (http://mcnair.web.unc.edu, http://trio.web.unc.edu) that they use as their main sites.

Other departments have had custom wordpress themes developed and are just looking for a good campus solution where they can host them. Honors Carolina (http://honorscarolina.unc.edu) is one such site, as is the American Indian Center (http://americanindiancenter.unc.edu).

There is also a third group of websites that have started to appear on web.unc.edu for research groups looking to recruit people to their labs to come and study here. There is a lot of research that points out the role a modern, up to date, and visually appealing site has in the recruiting process. Often the website is the first thing a potential student sees. The Marchetti Lab (http://marchettilab.web.unc.edu) director contacted us and worked with us to get his site set up so he could attract graduate students to come and work with him.
