UNC Digital Commons websites may only be used for any educational and university related work. This most commonly includes, but is not limited to, class websites, class blogs, and professional portfolios. You can not use this service for any personal, commercial, or non-university related website.
What are the space/size limitations of a site?
Each site has a 1GB limit for uploaded material. We can go beyond this if necessary, but as a general rule do not. We also have a 10MB file size limit for uploaded items. As long as your

WordPress.com. Your site will never disappear, however, even after you have left the university.

Student Orgs or contact the union and they will walk you through the process or getting certified and setting up a website.
Can I use FTP to install and edit my own themes and plugins
Yes and no. You can not install and edit your own plugins. That one is managed on the network level. If there is a plugin you would like considered you can submit a ticket and we will review it. Here are some
guidelines for adding new themes and plugins on web.unc.edu.As for themes, we can add themes to web.unc.edu using the guidelines above. If you want to develop your own custom theme you can send it to the web.unc.edu team for review and we can add it to your site, or even make it available to all sites on web.unc.edu. Large departments and projects can get a FTP folder with access to the themes files for their own site. Please
submit a ticket if you think you qualify as a department or large group and would like to set up your own custom space.
Is there a backup made of Web.unc.edu data?
Yes, we back up all the data multiple times a day to a outside server using
CrashPlanPro to protect against catastrophic failure. We do not, however offer restoration for individual sites for deleted content. There is a double redundancy built into web.unc.edu so that when you delete a page or post it goes to the trash folder that you can easily recover from. There is also a revision history of content that is automatically created when you edit the site that you can use to restore pages to earlier states.
What software are you using on UNC Digital Commons
UNC Digital Commons is proudly powered by
WordPress Multi-Site. It is a content management system originally developed for blogging, but also serves as a great simple and complex websites. You can think of it as software that lives on our webservers. A lot like Microsoft Word and other program lives on your computer. Anyone can learn to use it.
Who is running this thing?
This is truly a collaborative efforts between all sorts of group around the UNC campus. The Office of Arts and Sciences Information Services (OASIS) set the site up and maintains it. The hosting is on ITS’ Virtual Servers. The server is maintained by our friends over in ibiblio. The Onyen authentication piece was put into place by Mike Jennings in ITS. The Digital Commons homepage theme was graciously developed ITS Web-Design Services and modified within OASIS for our purposes.
Primary Contact: Jeff VanDrimmelen – Instructional Technologist (OASIS)
It should be noted that while OASIS is responsible for running this project, they are not responsible for the content on any web.unc.edu website. That is the sole responsibility of the owner of the website and all questions should be directed to them.
